Autonomy
Autonomy means that you can decide for yourself about your body, life and unborn child. In fact, autonomy is so important that it is a basic psychological need. People who are autonomous experience many things positively and feel happier.
The main reason why women do not look back contently on their delivery is not because it did not go as hoped or desired. It is because they felt ignored during labour. They felt that they did not have their say in what went on, so they no longer had autonomie. This is so easily avoided by simply asking a woman what she thinks and if she is okay with a suggested action.
Yes, the health of your child is extremely important. And yes, a mother's health and well-being are ALSO very important. The end does not always justify all means. A woman must always give permission for an action or treatment, even if refusing goes against medical advice. This is called "informed consent". And when women feel that they are in control, that they are allowed to make decisions about their body and baby, then they look back on their delivery favourably and with pride.
To me, autonomy is also an important concept in midwifery. You will soon notice that I always give options so that you have the choice whether or not to do something. Of course, I will fully inform you why a choice is being put before you and I can advise you. But the final choice is yours.
