Your maternity period
The maternity period is a time that many parents are eagerly looking forward to. Your child is finally with you and the adventure together can begin. Still, the maternity period can be hard work. You are recovering from your delivery, your baby still has to get used to life outside the womb and breastfeeding has yet to start. Add to this the sleepless nights and you may notice that sometimes it is a bit much. This is very normal, almost every woman experiences it this way. Even if marketeers of baby products say something else. In this period, I will support you. I will visit you at home a few times in the first week and see what you need. I will do a number of checks to see if you are healthy and I can help you breastfeed. In addition, I can advise you on sleeping together safely. If you like, I can (often at the end of your maternity week) come by with a baby sling so you can try if this might be something that suits you. I will then teach you how to carry your child and which way of wearing it feels good to you. When I leave, you can put your baby in the sling yourself. I have baby carriers and baby slings that you can rent for a week so you don't have to buy a new one immediately, but you can first try which one suits you.
After about six weeks I come by one last time for a follow-up check. Here we will discuss the delivery, see if there are any questions that you have and whether breastfeeding is going well. We will also discuss contraception and some exercises for training your pelvic floor muscles. If you feel that both of you are ready and have made a good start at parenting, we will conclude the care period together.
