Carrying your baby

During your pregnancy your baby has been in your womb. A place it knows - dark, confined, nice and warm and with the familiar sound of your heartbeat. After birth, there is bright light, many unknown sounds, cold and endless space. This may feel unsafe for your child. This can make it feel restless and cry a lot. And especially demand a lot of attention from its mother. Because that is the place it knows, your scent, your heartbeat, your warmth and your voice. The benefits from carrying your child are many, it feels safe and contained, carrying helps to regulate its temperature and hunger signals are picked up well. It is also nice that you have your hands free. If your child suffers from (hidden) reflux, carrying your child is ideal because it has a vertical position.

You can wear it anywhere, a sling is light and after some practice tying the wrap or putting your child in the sling will become routine. If you don't live on the ground floor, you don't have to carry a pram. Once you have decided that you would like to carry your child, a round of Googling often results in a lot of confusion. There are so many different wraps and baby carriers. And you've probably heard about the importance of good posture. Then it is difficult to choose what suits you. Especially since you can better spend your time feeding, cuddling and taking care of yourself.

I myself am a big fan of carrying, but for us one way of carrying in the sling was enough. When they got older, I also liked to use the baby carrier. Carrying your child correctly can therefore be relatively easy. I am happy to help you choose the right sling or baby carrier and together find out what suits you.

If you do need other ways of knotting and carrying on your back, I will also be happy to explain what is possible, what is important to pay attention to when carrying and especially how you can do it with pleasure.

Tips

  • First try out some wraps and baby carriers; there is not one best wrap for everyone.
  • Buy or borrow a cheaper sling along with it; especially with very little ones, it sometimes happens that their diaper leaks and that the cloth has to be washed. Then you are not suddenly without a sling.
  • Your child is at the right height when you can easily give it a kiss on its forehead.
  • Make sure that the hips are always in an M shape (like a frog) against your stomach. If your child's posture is good, but the wrap is not quite neatly knotted, no problem. Don't let that stop you from wearing it, just try again next time.
  • Make sure that your child is looking at you, that it is not looking at the world while when being carried on your belly, but only at you.

I offer various carrying consultations:

  • Fitting consult - 1 to 1.5 hours.
Here we will try various wraps and baby carriers. We do this together with you and your child. We try a number of models and then see where you and your child feel comfortable with. If you want, you can also borrow a baby wrap for a week to see if you really like it before you buy one yourself.
  • Knotting consultation - 1 to 1.5 hours
We will work with various other knots, such as carrying on the back. You indicate what you need and then we will work together to ensure that you can carry your child in the way that you like.
  • Cost of carrying consultation: € 50
  • Cost of renting a sling: € 10 per week
